On a very hot and steamy afternoon Friday, the Shedd Aquarium teamed up with biological technicians from the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore and Chicago teenagers to continue efforts to return Cowles Bog to its natural state.
Known as Great Lakes Action Days, the effort is in its third year taking volunteers to local beaches and parks to conduct environmental studies and trash removal to keep the Great Lakes healthy. Students from the Gary Comer Youth Center worked in the morning and were relieved in the afternoon by Greencorps, a Chicago youth jobs program that teaches teens 15 to 19 about urban forestry, horticulture and bike maintenance under the leadership of the umbrella group No Veteran Left Behind.
