Amid rising division and monumental change, democracy faces unprecedented challenges. Recognizing that power belongs with the people, we fund organizations working to safeguard democratic principles by fostering civic engagement, advocating for civil and immigrant rights, upholding the rule of law, creating forums for thoughtful discourse and sustaining a free press. The work of our grantees and partners is made possible by shared values of freedom, justice, and equality.

Our hometown, Chicago, represents a microcosm of a country that is home to people of all backgrounds, races, and ethnicities. In June of 2000, the 18th edition of Chicago’s Puerto Rican Festival was held at the North Side’s Humboldt Park. The annual event continues draws attendees to the community in celebration of the culture of the island and the contributions of Puerto Ricans who immigrated to this city. ©James Iska, 2000, Chicago in the Year 2000.
